ARTIFICE

ARTIFICE studies the absurd world we have inherited. What remains when the image a society created of itself outlives the belief that produced it.

Through an architectural and artistic research practice, we work with spaces caught between two worlds, frozen in time, crystallizing a vision of prosperity in which innovation was often mistaken for progress.

Shopping centres, hotels, airports, car parks and housing become places where the Waiting that defines our time manifests itself most intensely, like gateways into a distorted spacetime. These are spaces where the temporality imposed by architecture comes into conflict with the constant fluctuations of consumerism, where supply has solidified while demand has shifted or transformed.

Within these highly artificial environments, where kitsch prevails, we choose to work with empathy and consideration. We document, catalogue and archive them before they disappear or are transformed.

Our practice then seeks to inhabit and intervene within these gaps through architectural projects. What we observe and collect becomes material for imagining other uses, but also for producing images, films, sounds and narratives.

These places are mirrors of ourselves: we too inhabit the transition.
